3.1.1 Specialised Exchange Surfaces Flashcards
1
Q
Why do organisms need gas exchange?
A
- to supply oxygen
- to remove CO2
2
Q
Why do we need exchange systems?
A
Increasing BMR with increasing body mass
- So larger organisms consume more oxygen than smaller ones
- Requiring a more efficient gas exchange system
.
Decreasing SA:V ratio with increasing size
- So less SA for absorption of nutrients and gases
.
Increasing size, greater diffusion distance
- Takes longer for oxygen to reach cells from site of gas exchange
3
Q
How can BMR be measured?
A
- Oxygen Consumption (respirometer)
- CO2 Production (CO2 probe)
- Heat Production (calorimeter)
