3.1 What are the elements? Flashcards
Matter
anything that has a volume & mass> solid, liquid, or gas
Element
a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by physical or chemical means (identified by a chemical symbol)
How many elements occur on Earth & in the stars?
92
Atom
the smallest particle of an element that has all of the characteristics of that element
Nucleus
center of an atom that is made up of protons & neutrons
Proton (p+)
a tiny particle that has a mass & a positive electrical charge
Neutron(n^0)
a particle with abut the same mass as a proton, electrically neutral> no electrical charge
What do all atomic nuclei have?
a positive charge> protons with a positive electrical charge & neutrons with no electrical charges
Atomic Number
number of protons in an atom’s nucleus
Mass Number
combined number of protons & neutrons
Electron(e-)
surround the nucleus of the atom> little mass, negative electrical charge
Energy Level
represents the area in an atom where an electron s most likely to be found
Valence Electrons
outermost electrons that determine the chemical behavior of elements
Isotopes
atoms of the same element that have different mass numbers & the same chemical properties
Atomic Mass
average of the mass numbers of the isotopes of an element
