3.1 The Periodic Table Flashcards
How are elements arranged in the periodic table?
Elements are arranged in order of increasing nuclear charge (number of protons)
Periodicity
Repeating patterns of chemical and physical properties
What do you call the columns and how many are there?
They are called Groups and there are 18
What do you call the rows and how many are there?
They are called Periods and there are 7
What do groups represent and give examples
They represent the number of valence electrons eg. Group 1 elements have 1 valence electron and for groups after 13, the no. of valence electrons is (group no-10)
What do periods represent?
No. of occupied main energy levels
Which blocks are the metals and non-metals found in?
Metals are usually found in the s, d, f blocks while non-metals are found in the p block
What are groups 1 and 2 called?
Alkali and alkaline earth metals
What are groups 17 and 18 called?
Halogens and noble gases
What are metalloids?
Semi-metals, elements with properties of both metals and non-metals
Which group is the most reactive: Group 1,2,17 or 18
Group 1 is the most reactive, Group 2 is slightly less reactive. Group 17 is the most reactive of the non-metals and group 18 are completely unreactive
Which block are transition metals in?
D-block region
What are the metallic elements in the f block called?
Lanthanides and actinides
Which elements are lanthanides?
57-71 (rare earth metals)
Which elements are actinides?
89-103 (radioactive metals)
