3.1 states of matter Flashcards
What are the three states of matter?
Liquid, solid, gas
How are the particles arranged in a solid?
The particles in a solid are packed closely together and vibrate around fixed positions
How are particles arranged in a liquid?
The particles in a liquid are close together but can slip and slide over each other in random motion
How are the particles arranged in a gas?
The particles in a gas have, on average, lots of space between them and zoom around randomly
What happens to energy in melting and boiling?
In melting and boiling, energy transferred from the surroundings to the substance
What happens to energy in freezing?
In freezing and condensing, energy transferred from the substance to the surroundings
What is state of matter?
States of matter tells us whether a substance is a solid, a liquid or, a gas
What is the particle theory?
The particle theory explained the properties of materials by describing the movement of a distance between their particles
