3.1 Species, Communities And Ecosystems Flashcards
organism reproduces sexually only with another of the same type, and hybrids between different types of species are rare.
Species
When two members of the same species mate and produce offspring.
Interbreeding
Occasionally members of different species breed together
Cross-breeding
is a group of organisms of the same species that inhabit the same area at the same time.
Population
which means self-feeding. They make their own carbon compounds from carbon dioxide and other simple substances.
Autotrophic
which means feeding on others. They obtain their carbon compounds from other organisms.
Heterotrophic
feed off other organisms. These other organisms are either still alive or have only been dead for a relatively short time. They ingest their food, digest and absorb the products of digestion.
Consumers(heterotrophs)
Are heterotrophs that obtain organic nutrients from detritus by internal digestion
Detritivores
secrete digestive enzymes into the dead organic matter and digest it externally. They then absorb the products of digestion. Ex. Bacteria and fungi
Saprotrophs (decomposers)
Are formed by populations of diferent species living together and interacting with each other.
Community
Is a community of organisms in an area and their interactions with their non-living environment, called also the abiotic environment.
Ecosystem
Which chemical elements are needed to make carbohydrates, lipids, and other carbon compounds?
Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, phosphorus and oxygen
There are three requirements for sustainability in ecosystems:
Nutrient availability
Detoxification of waste products
Energy availability
