What is urbanisation
The growth in the proportion of a country’s population living in urban areas
What proportion of the world are currently living in urban areas
Over 50% , 3.9billion people and is increasing everyday
Rates of urbanisation in Developed countries (3)
- Urbanisation happened earlier in these countries (18th, 19th century)
- most 79% of the population already live in urban areas.
- However, developed countries have the slowest rates of urban growth.

- A smaller 35% of population live in urban areas

- Percentage that live in urban areas vary
2. Some such as Thailand, China are experiencing rapid growth.
Future projections of global urbanisation (2)
- Predicted to continue at a fast rate in areas that still have a large rural population
- By 2050, the majority of people in every global region are predicated to live in urban areas
What is a megacity
A city which has a population of over 10million people.
2014: 28 megacities
2030: predicted 41 megacities
Where are megacities?
More than two thirds of megacities are in emerging or developing countries, mostly Asia,
eg Dhaka in Bangledesh
What is urban primacy and a primate city?
Urban primacy is when one city dominates the country it is in
These primate cities usually have a much larger population (2x) than the next big city.
Role of Primary cities (3)
- Investment: businesses locate there = attracts investment in infrastructure and services.
- Transport: international ports and airports are located there =further investment and migration.
- Headquaters of TNC’s and governments: decisions about development favour city not country.
