Q

Define the operation of the SAPHEI round

A
  • Electric current ignites primer
  • Primer ignites propellant charge
  • Gas pressure builds up and projectile is forced down the barrel
  • Spin is imparted as the rifling engages the driving band
  • Setback drives firing pin rearwards and compresses firing pin spring
  • Centrifugal force moves balls in ball holder and double spiral spring outwards
  • Firing pin begins to creep forward
  • On impact, inertia will drive firing pin forward
  • Firing pin strikes detonator
  • Functions priming delay and main fill
