Government Intervention
The UK government has signed up to a range of EU limits and controls designed to restrict the negative impact of business activity. A range of green taxes have been designed to encourage businesses to improve environmental practices, for example: The Climate Change Levy and The Landfill Tax
The Environment Agency
The government,ent body that monitors and controls pollution, it has had a significant role in; erin helping to reduce emissions into the air, cleaning up our rivers, and ensuring UK businesses comply with legislation
Pressure groups
Organisations formed with the objective of influencing government or business policy at local, national, or international level. For example: WWF who help change attitudes wards environmental issues and aim to protect endangered wildlife
Methods that pressure groups use
Lobbying (meeting with MPs), Direct action (forcing businesses to make policy reversals), Publicity (gaining positive media attention), Legal action (questioning the legality of proposed actions)
Education
Informing consumers of the environmental damage caused by businesses
How businesses can respond
Carrying out a green audit, using renewable energy, reduce waste
Advantages of being environmentally friendly
Subsidies and grants, lower costs, increased sales
Disadvantages of being environmentally friendly
Increased costs, time consuming, potential for inaccurate claims
