304 Flashcards
1
Q
what are the 2 processes involved in the formation of precipitation
A
Bergeron effect
Collision process
2
Q
Bergeron effect
A
- Water vapour evaporates off of a water droplet in a cloud
- deposits on an ice crystals
- droplet shrinks, ice crystal grows
3
Q
Collision process
A
- occurs after bergeron effect
- in warm cloud
- large particle collide with smaller ones
- particles accumulate until they are large enough to fall as precipitation
4
Q
Collision process terminology:
coalescence
aggregation
accretion
A
coalescence - liquid to liquid
aggregation - solid to solid
accretion - solid to liquid
Fragmentation - solid or liquid
5
Q
3 factors that explain the intensity of precipitation
A
- updraft stregnth
- cloud water content
- cloud vertical thickness
6
Q
updraft strength
A
-assists in growing particles in cloud through collision and fragmentation
7
Q
Cloud water content
A
- higher temperatures increase potential for water content
8
Q
Cloud vertical thickness
A
-increased thickness could favour greater intensities
