303e And F Flashcards
Function of a retarder
Used to reduce speed of equipment through hydrodynamic braking
What is an input retarder?
Installed as a part of the transmission assembly. Located between the torque converter and the transmission
What is an output retarder?
Installed on the transmission output shaft. Act independently of changes in the engine rpm or transmission gear selector
What is a remote mount retarder?
Installed on the driveline remote from the transmission
Retarder components?
Rotor Housing Pump/supply circuit Cooler Control valve/control circuit Wet brake Accumulator
Purpose of a retarder rotor?
Attached to the output shaft of whatever it is connected to. Shears the oil providing a braking like affect
Purpose of a retarder housing?
Sometimes called the stator, encircles the rotor.
Purpose of oil pump and supply circuit?
The oil pump that supplies oil to the torque converter/transmission may be used to supply the retarder
3 methods control retarders, what are they?
Manual operator control
Air over hydraulic controls
Electronic control
What is a wet brake system?
Used on on-highway trucks to start retarder process. Applied with vehicle brakes
Accumulator purpose?
Fast fill of retarder housing
When the retarder is mounted between the engine and torque converter what is required for proper operation?
Lockup clutch in torque converter to transmit braking force to driveline
What happens if retarder is too small for application?
Excessive heat will be generates quickly and oil will deteriorate more rapidly.
Signs of retarder failure?
Shiny steel particles
Aluminium particles
Rubber particles
Iron or steel chips
