3.01 Acids and bases Flashcards
What is the range of the pH scale?
0 to 14
What is pH a measure of?
How acidic or alkaline a solution is
Give the pH, or pH range, of a neutral, acidic and alkaline solution.
Neutral = 7
Acidic <7 to 0
Alkaline >7 to 14
Give an example of a neutral substance
Pure water
What ions do acids contain?
H+ (hydrogen ion)
What ions do alkalis contain?
OH- (hydroxide ion)
What is a base?
A substance which reacts with an acid to produce salt and water
What is an alkali?
A base that is solubel in water
What is an acid?
A substance that releases H+ ions when in aqueous solution
As the concentration of H+ ions increases, does a solution become more or less acidic?
More acidic with more H+ ions
As the concentration of OH- ions increases, does a solution become more or less alkaline?
More alkaline with more OH- ions
What is an indicator?
A dye that changes colour depending on the pH
What colours are shown by universal indicator when the pH is (1) red, (2) green, (3) purple?
Red = acidic
Green = neutral
Purple = alkaline
What colour does universal indicator go when a solution is (1) acidic; (2) alkaline; and (3) neutral?
Acid = red
Neutral = green
Alkaline = purple
What colour does litmus go when a solution is (1) acidic; (2) alkaline; and (3) neutral?
Acid = red
Neutral = purple
Alkaline = blue
