3.0 Flashcards
whats dispersion?
scattering of a substance away from its source
whats the difference between permeable and impermeable?
permeable is a substance that contains connected pores that fluids can flow through, and impermeable does not
whats leachate?
liquid that dissolves and carries substances, especially harmful substances, as it passes through soil.
whats dilution, and photolysis?
dilution is the mixing of a substance with air or water causing the reduction of the concentration of that substance, and photolysis is is the breakdown of compounds by the sun.
whats biodegration and biomagnification?
biodegration is the breakdown of materials by organisms (earthworms etc) and biomagnification is the increase in the concentration of a chemical as it moves up the food chain.
whats photodegradable and phytoremediation?
photodegradable is plastics made up of chemicals that react when exposed to the sunlight, and phytoremediation is the clean up of the environment through the use of plants.
whats the difference between aerobic and anaerobic?
aerobic is environments that require or contain oxygen, and anaerobic is environments that dont require or contain oxygen.
what are three types of atmospheric transport?
release of chemicals at the source, dispersion of the chemical in the atmosphere, and dispersion of the chemicals in the soil or water.
list three factors that affect the rate of biodegration.
temperature, oxygen supply, and nutrient availability
what is groundwater?
water that fills all the pores in the soil
describe the correct storage and disposal of a can of paint
bring leftover paint to collection sites where they can be recycled. for empty cans, remove the lids and let the paint dry. once its dry, put the cans in the garbage. store it in a cool, dry, ventilated place with lid tightly closed.
