1.0 Flashcards
what do the numbers 10-0-0 on a fertilizer label mean?
10% nitrogen, 0% phosphorus and potassium. promotes leaf and stem growth
identify 2 potential environmental concerns that would arise from the use of fertilizers?
run off from fertilizers into ponds and streams can damage ecosystems, and it could seep deeper into the soil and contaminate ground water.
how do red and blue litmus paper distinguish between acids and bases?
blue litmus paper turns red when placed in acids, red litmus paper turns blue in bases.
if you spill a large amount of strong acid chemical, how do you clean it up?
spread a weak vase, reaction would be easier to clean up.
whats the difference between organic and inorganic compounds?
organic has carbon in it (sugar), inorganic does not (salt).
how are diffusion, osmosis, and active transport similar and how are they different?
all methods of movement, diffusion and osmosis dont require energy while active transport does
what is the definition of insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides?
insecticides - chemical used to kill insects
herbicides - chemical used to kill weeds
fungicides - chemical used to kill fungi.
whats a sanitary landfill?
a site where waste is isolated from the environment until it is safe, leachate must be prevented from entering environment
what are lipids?
organic molecules made up of atoms of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen.
whats diffusion, osmosis, and active transport?
diffusion - process in which molecules move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
osmosis - water molecules move from higher concentration to lower concentration of water molecules.
active transport - plant cells use energy to move nutrient molecules from lower concentration to higher concentration.
whats a substrate?
surface on which an organism lives or moves.
