3) Waves Flashcards
How are waves generated?
Waves are generated by vibrations, such as those observed in ropes and springs.
What happens when waves propagate?
‘Propogate’ mean to move forward in a certain direction.
Waves transfer energy from one point to another without transferring matter.
It is important to know that matter is not transferred when waves propogate.
What is the name of part 1 of a wave?
wavelength
Wavelength can also be the distance between 2 successive trouhgs.
What is the name of part 2 of a wave?
trough
The trough is the lowest point of a wave.
What is the name of part 3 of a wave?
amplitude
Amplitude is the distance between the rest point (the horizontal line named ‘equilibrium’) and the highest point of a wave.
What is the name of part 4 of a wave?
crest
Crest is the highest point of a wave.
What is a frequency of a wave?
The number of complete oscillations or cycles of a wave per unit of time.
Meaured in Hertz (Hz), which means cycles per second.
e.g. 20 Hz means 20 cycles per second.
Name one use of radio waves.
Radio or television communications
Transmission of signals for TV or radio
Name one use of microwaves.
Microwave oven, satellite communication
cooking in the microwave oven or transmission of information via the satellite.
Name one use of infrared waves.
Remote-controlled devices
remote controls for TV and toys etc.
Name one use of light waves.
Optical fibers for telecommunication.
To transmit information at high speed through the optical fibers.
Name one use of ultraviolet waves.
Sterilization, sunbeds.
sterilazation of surfaces and artificial suntanning in sunbeds.
Name one use of X-rays.
Engineering and radiological applications.
X-rays used to detect broken bones in humans or used in industry to check for cracks and flaws in materials.
Name one use of gamma rays.
Medical applications.
Used in radiotherapy to kill caner cells. (Not to be confused with radiowaves)
