#3 Viscosity, Adhesion & Cohesion Flashcards
What is viscosity?
The thickness of fluids that describes the resistance of flow
Are thicker liquids more or less viscous?
More viscous, thicker liquids will flow more slowly
What are examples of thick liquids?
Honey, caramel, mucus, syrup
What happens to the viscosity of liquids when heated and cooled?
heated → particles move further apart → less attraction, less friction → viscosity decreases
cooled → closer → more attraction, more friction → viscosity increases
What happens to the viscosity of gases when heated and cooled?
heated → further apart & move faster → more collision, more friction → viscosity increases
cooled → closer & move slower → less collision, less friction → viscosity decreases
What is cohesion?
The attractive forces among particles of a substance
What is an example of cohesion?
Water droplets
What is surface tension?
Attractive forces become stronger at the surface of the fluid
ex: water strider
What is adhesion?
Attractive forces between particles of fluid and another substance
What are examples of adhesion?
- water clings to glass
- ketchup and honey stick to glass
- water climbs up the paper towel
What is the relationship between pressure and depth?
Pressure increases with depth
What is 1 atm?
air pressure at sea level
with each 10 m that you go deeper in water, pressure goes up by 1 atm
What is buoyancy?
Tendency for objects to rise or float
Why does buoyancy occur?
Occurs due to the difference in density
What is buoyant force?
Force caused by fluids pushing up
