#1 Fluids and Density Flashcards
What are fluids?
Any form of matter that can flow (no fixed shape)
What are examples of fluids?
Liquids and gases
What is density?
The amount of mass contained in a certain volume
Usually, are liquids more dense or less dense than solids?
Less dense
As temperature increases, particles of a substance spread out and density ________.
Decreases
Why is water an exception of liquids being less dense than solids?
Water particles spread apart more in solid form and ice flows on liquid water
What is the formula for density calculations?
density = mass/volume
What are the possible units of density?
g/mL, g/cm³, kg/L
How do you find mass?
Use a balance or scale
How do you find the volume of a simple shape?
Width × length × height → do the math
How do you find the volume of an irregular shape?
Use a method known as displacement.
Put something in water, the volume of water goes up and subtract it from the original volume of water.
[Practice Question A] A machine shop worker records the mass of an aluminum cube as 176 g. If one side of the cube measures 4 cm, what is the density of the aluminum?
density = 2.75 g/cm³
[Practice Question B] A graduated cylinder containing 50 mL of water has a mass of 70 g. As you put the object in a graduated cylinder, the water rises to 80 mL and the total mass increases to 90 g. What is the density of the object?
density = 0.66 g/mL
What is the shape of a solid, liquid and gas?
solid = fixed liquid = not fixed (takes the shape of the container) gas = not fixed
What is the volume of a solid, liquid and gas?
solid = fixed liquid = fixed gas = not fixed
