( 3 ) TRANSPORTATION VRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRMMMMMMMMMM ( PLANTS ) Flashcards
What is transpiration?
Process or water loss in the form on water vapour from the surface of leaves to the air through evaporation
What is the epidermis of a leaf made up of?
Single layer of epidermal cells covering both the upper and lower surfaces of the leafs
What do epidermal cells secrete?
Waxy Cuticle, covers the outer surface of the leaf to prevent water loss during transpiration
What does the stoma do to reduce the loss of water through transpiration
Closed stoma
What is exudation?
Water loss from plants in liquid form through hydathodes that are always open at the edges of the leaves
Other than transpiration, water is also lost through
Exudation/Guttation
When does guttation usually occur?
At night or when air humidity is high
Factors affecting transpiration
Number of stomata
Movement of air
Light intensity
Temp
Air humidity
Where are the xylem and phloem located?
Located in the vascular bundle
Function of Xylem
Transport water and dissolved mineral salts from the roots to the leaves through the stem to carry out photosynthesis and replace water lost during transpiration
Function of Phloem
Transports sucrose produced by leaves during photosynthesis to other parts of the plants
