3 Transcription Flashcards
Second strand
(-) DNA template strand, RNA polymerase uses this as a template
Top strand
(+) DNA coding strand, RNA produced has same sequence and polarity as it
DNA
T
RNA
U
RNA polymerase
Reads the template strand
Transcription
Making a polymer of ribonucleic acid (RNA) that has a sequence complementary and antiparallel to a strand of template DNA
Sigma factor
Important for RNA polymerase in bacteria and prokaryotes -binds to an element in the promoter with sequence TATAAT, the tayra box - when it binds to the promoter, it recruits DNA polymerase - released when transcription starts
TATA box
10 base pairs upstream of the promoter in eukaryotes only
Transcription Eukaryotes
Tata box is about 25base pairs upstream of transcription start site - bound by tata binding protein (tbp) - many coactivators and basal transcription factors also help start transcription
Lac operon
Allows switch between using glucose as fuel and using lactose as fuel- glucose is preferred bc it can generate ATP more efficiently
