3. Transcription Flashcards
1
Q
define transcription
A
where the DNA code is transcribed into a single strand of RNA called mRNA
2
Q
where does transcription take place
A
the nucleus of cells
3
Q
outline the steps of transcription
A
- RNA polymerase binds at the start codon
- RNA helicase breaks the hydrogen bonds on the specific section of DNA needed
- this exposes the bases
- free floating nucleotides attach to the bases via complimentary base pairing
- DNA polymerase joins these bases to the nucleotides, forming a pre-mRNA strand
- as RNA polymerase moves along the DNA strands reform hydrogen bonds on their own
- RNA polymerase will stop at a stop codon
- pre-mRNA is then spliced, removing the introns, before leaving the nucleus via the nuclear pores
4
Q
what are the coding sections of DNA called?
A
exons
5
Q
what are the non-coding sections of DNA called?
A
introns
