A

At the end of August 1958 there was a large concentration of Caribbean people in Notting Hill.

The area was rundown and tenants were exploited with overcrowded and badly maintained houses

At first the violence was mostly white youths attacking west Indians, then some violence concentrated in the other direction

The police were unprepared and lacked experience of dealing with the race riots
