Sentence Structure

A

Quote + Technique + Effect + Context

List- “Quote” emphasises a wide range, then refer to context

Repetition- “Quote” phrase repeated, then effect to emphasise, then refer to context

Colon:- Used to introduce a list, explanation, or examples

Semi-colon;- Used to link similar or contrasting ideas

Single dash- Used to introduce an explanation, or examples

“Inverted commas”- Used to create irony or a mocking tone

Minor sentence (no verb)- Used to create a dramatic, blunt, dismissive tone

Short sentence (one verb)- Used to create a dramatic, blunt, dismissive tone

Rhetorical question?- To invite a shared response which is obvious to agree on

Parenthesis- brackets, commas, dashes- To add extra information, or a dismissive mocking side

Inversion- To emphasise an idea, to make something stand out

Parallel structure- To emphasise two different/contrasting ideas

Ellipsis- To suggest a tailing off of the writers thoughts, to indicate the writer is struggling for words, to show confusion or uncertainty, to suggest a cliff hanger
