Plot
Jackson and his wife revisit their hometown Glasgow
Jackson is enthusiastic whilst his wife isn’t, and they are approached by youths
This makes him reconsider why he moved back to Glasgow as it isn’t the same as it used to be
Imagery
“surrounded by a pack of children” suggests the youths’ animalistic behaviour shows their wildness and lack of control
“Two tall youngsters” suggests the youths show physical dominance over Jackson which adds to the threat he feels
Isolation/alienation
“I was just visiting” suggests Jackson finds the town he used to live in very different as he now doesn’t belong there
“Tourist” suggests he no longer belongs in Glasgow as he isn’t seen as part of the community
Individuality vs Conformity
“I was just visiting” suggests Jackson finds Glasgow very different as he now is an individual who isn’t part of the community
“Tourist” suggests he no longer belongs in Glasgow as he doesn’t conform to the area like he used to
Setting
“pitted with scars” suggests the buildings are vandalised and damaged adding to the bleak mood
“dirty blue” suggests the walls of the houses are neglected and require cleaning
Conflict
“Get out of here…before we cut you up” suggests the youths’ threat towards Jackson shows the tension he is now faced with in his hometown
“spat” suggests the youths aggression shows a lack of care towards Jackson as they are warning him to leave immediately
“daddy” suggests the youths are rejecting him by mocking his name which shows him he isn’t part of here anymore
Grief
“I used to live here” suggests a loss of grief as he is now treated disrespectfully by the community
“The best years of my life” suggests Jackson feels a sense of nostalgia and grief as he can no longer experience those times again
Understanding/realisation
“I wish to god we were home” suggests he realises he no longer belongs in Glasgow and wants to be back in Africa again
“We’re going anyway” suggests he now understands that Glasgow isn’t how it used to be and so is deciding to leave
