3. rhythms Flashcards
exogenous rhythms?
envrionmental cues that act as a zeitgeber
what is a zeitgeber?
envrionmental stimuli that resets the internal biological clock
entrainment?
resetting of the biological clock
observed rhythm?
result of exogenous entrainment of endogenous rhythms
endogenous rhythms?
driven by an internal biological clock (hormones)
free running period
period of time when an organisms’ biological rhythm is running under constant envrionmental conditions (without exogenous rhythm for entrainment)
what is an actogram?
a graph that shows the activity of an animal/plant over many successive days
how do you know if an organism is endogenous from an actogram?
if the normal rhythms continue when the organism is placed in constant conditions without an external stimuli
