3. Polarity (Electronegativity Difference) Flashcards
Define electronegativity.
the term used to measure the tendency of an atom to attract a bonding pair of electrons.
what is a non-polar bond?
it is an equal sharing of electrons between atoms. Also known as a pure covalent bond.
True or false, there is a electronegativity difference between atoms of the same element.
False, there is no electronegativity difference between atoms of the same element and atoms attract the shared electrons equally.
What is an polar bond?
an unequal sharing of electrons leading to a dipole forming; as a result of an electronegativity difference.
Does a polar bond change the overall charge on a molecule?
No, the overall charge on the molecule is neutral. However the atoms are polarised or attracted to one side of the molecule.
Where does the electron pair get attracted to?
it is pulled more toward the atom with the higher electronegativity.
