3. Modulation & Multiplexing Flashcards
What is modulation?
Makes the information signal more compatible with the medium
What is multiplexing?
Allows more than one signal to be transmitted concurrently over a single medium (i.e. to share the same channel)
What are the basic types of multiplexing?
Frequency division; time division and code division
What is baseband transmission?
Information that can be sent directly and unmodified over the medium OR can be used to modulate a carrier for transmission over the medium
What is broadband transmission?
A transmission that takes place when a carrier signal is modulated, amplified and sent to the antenna for transmission
What are modems?
Translate the data from digital to analogue and vice verse
What is a carrier?
A high frequency signal that is modulated by audio, video or data.
What is a radio frequency?
An electromagnetic signal that is able to travel long distances through space
