1. Communication Systems Flashcards
What are the basic components of communications?
Transmitter; Channel and Receiver
What is the transmitter?
A collection of electronic components and circuits that convert the electrical signal into a signal suitable for transmission over a given medium
What are transmitters made up of?
Oscillators, amplifiers, tuned circuits, filters, modulators, frequency mixers, frequency synthesisers and other electrical circuits
What is the channel?
The communication channel is the medium by which the electronic signal is sent from one place to another
What are some of the mediums for channels?
Electrical conductors; optical media; free-space media; system specific (e.g. water for sonar)
What is a receiver?
A collection of components and circuits that accepts the transmitted message from the channel and converts it back into an understandable form
What are receivers made of?
Amplifiers; oscillators; mixers; tuned circuits and filters, and a demodulator or detector that recovers the original intelligence signal from the modulated carrier
What is a transceiver?
An electronic unit that incorporates circuits that both send and receive signals
What are some example of transceivers?
Telephones; handheld radios; cell phones; computer modems
What is noise?
Random, undesirable electronic energy that enters the communication system
