3 Main Functions of Bone Flashcards
What are the mechanical functions of bone?
Protection - Ribs protect internal organs, skull protect the brain
shape - Gives body structure to maintain form
movement - by being manouevered and pulled by muscles allowing a variety of movements
transfer sound - bones form sound waves like vibrations in the ear
What are the synthetic functions
Blood Cell Production- red bone marrow in epiphysis produces all blood cells through haematopoiesisis
Metabolic- Bones store and remove some toxic materials such as lead. Taking it away from organs and storing it in the bone.
The brain releases- Phosphorus mainly calcium, growth factors and detoxification factors
Bone growth (re-modelling of bone cells)
Osteoblasts- (BUILDING) layering a new layer of bone down is the bone was fractured
Osteoclasts- The cells corrode or break down bonce so the osteoblast can come and build a new layer
