3. Magnetism and Electromagnetism Flashcards
What creates magnetism?
Charges in motion which affects the direction of magnetic dipole
What is flux (Wb) density?
Concentration of magnetic feild lines per area (T)
What are the 3 types of magnetic materials? Give examples of materials for each.
- Diamagnetic: Wood
- Paramagnetic: Gadolinium
- Ferromagnetic: Iron
In which magnetic materials are all the electrons paired up with no inherent dipoles?
Diamagnetic materials
Give the description of both permanent and temporary magnets:
Permanent: Hard ferromagnetic material, aligned domains stay aligned
Temporary: Soft ferromagnetic material, only stay aligned in magnetic field, electromagnets
What are 3 ways that you can create/destroy magnets?
Create:
1. Interact with another magnet
2. Hammer
3. Run current through
Destroying:
1. Heat
2. Hammer
3. Reverse the feild
Describe electromagnetism and electromagnetic induction
ELECTROMAGNETISM:
-Creating magnetism from electricity
-Running current through wire
-Can be turned on and off
ELECTROMAGNETIC INDUCTION:
-Using magnetism to create electricity
-2 magnets interact to create Voltage
What are 3 factors affecting size of electromagnet field?
- Number of turns in coil
- Size of current-motion and number of e
- Size of iron core
What are electromagnet uses? List 4.
- Electromagnet locks
- Transformers-decreases or increases v
- Circuit breakers
- Motors
What is one cycle with electromagnetic induction
Two pulses
When is the peak V?
On sine wave
At 90 degrees
Describe the conversion of energy in electromagnetism
- Begin with electricity
- Created magnetic energy
- Created kinetic energy
What are the factors that affect induced V
- Magnet strength
- Armature
-# of loops in coil
-Conductor
-Size of iron
How do you know which wire will have more V in a transformer?
Both have the same amount of V per turn, but whichever has more coils has more V
What does a step up or step down transformer do?
Increases/decreases V (all transformers in our house are step down from 120V+60A)
