3 - Inlet Flashcards
What is the purpose of IGV
To straighten airflow and avoid compressor stall
What is a divided duct and where is it used
Takes air from either side of the fuselage
Mostly used on military aircraft
What are inlet ducts designed to do to airflow
Decrease velocity and therefore increase static pressure
What is the name of a duct that can cahnge its shape
Variable-geometry
Explain the difference between ram effect and ram recovery
- The process by which air pressure is restored (recovery)
- The result of air being forced into the engine (effect)
When is a bellmouth inlet used?
During engine testing to achieve high aerodynamic efficiency
What effects can ice have on the engine
- Disturbed airflow
- Damage to blades or vanes
What types of anti-ice protection are there
- Bleed air
- Electrical heating
What is the nam eof the valve that controls the bleed air anti-ice
Anti-ice valve
Describe the process of bleed air anti-ice
Hot air is bled from HP compressor and passed through the pressure regualting valve
How can the anti-ice be controlled
Manually or automatically from the flight deck
Where is hot bleed air extracted from
Compressor/diffuser
What conditions and tempreature can ice form in
- 5C dry
- 7C moist
What must be running when the anti-ice strips are on
Engines to provide cooling
