3 - Fenn: interviewing and interrogating minority suspects Flashcards
What was the aim?
To better understand interviewing and interrogation experiences differ based on the minority status of the subject
-> understanding these difference can improve interviewing
What are some behavioural differences between minority and non-minority suspects?
-> minorities are more at risks of behaviours that cane lead to misclassification
What are the negative influences of stereotype threat and lie detection on minorities?
Stereotype threat can affect the behaviour of the suspect which in turn is misread as showing suspiciousness, deception or guilt
Lie detection
-> minorities might be wrongly evaluated by police because of verbal and nonverbal behaviour common to their culture
What are the two types of cultural differences in communication styles (low and high context)
low-context communication: relies on the explicit meaning of the context (words)
high-context communication: relies on the implicit meaning of the context (tone)
How can we improve the elicitation of quality information?
use humane, non-accusatorial and non-coercive tactics
3 stages
-> preparation of analysis
-> interview
-> closing
What are the benefits of evidence-based methods for interviewing minority suspects?
-> preparation and planning promotes better understanding and less biases
-> building rapport and empathy foster cooperation and trust
