3. Dyeing of Tshirts Flashcards
Product Dyeing
An article can be dyed after it has been completed. For many years this method was used mainly for dyeing sweaters and household items such as towels and bedspreads. The method used for this is called paddledyeing. These days, product dyeing is used on fully manufactured garments. The fabric is prepared for dyeing, cut and sewn into garments and then left until orders for specific colours arrive. Garments can then quickly be dyed in the correct colour. This is known as garmentdyeing. The colour of garment-dyed clothing is more inclined to bleed or fade than that of clothing that has been dyed conventionally. Benetton garments are frequently garment-dyed.
A fashion house wants to produce cotton T shirts that could easily be adapted to changing fashion colour requirements but that would nevertheless be quite colourfast and not fade. Which stage would you choose for dying and what type would you choose?
For the dyeing stage I would choose product dyeing, where the T short would already be made up, so the time to market for a new colour is shortened. The colour if the garment dyed clothing is more inclined to bleed or fade than that of conventional dyed clothing. This could be overcome by using a dyeing auxiliary. Vat and reactive dyes both have good to excellent fastness to washing and light and are suitable for cotton fibres. Vast dyes are expensive and it is difficult to produce bright shades, so reactive dyes would be more suitable to meet the customers requirements.
