Ionic Bond
Definition
Ionic bonds are strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely-charged ions.
Structure of Ionic Compounds
Giant ionic structure
Consists of a continuously repeating 3-dimensional lattice of positive and negative ions.
Ions are closely packed, arranged in an orderly manner, and held in fixed positions by strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely-charge ions.
Melting Point of Ionic Compounds
Ionic compounds generally have high melting points and exist as solids at r.t.p.
Ionic compounds have a giant ionic structure.
Large amount of energy is required to overcome the strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely-charged ions.
Electrical Conductivity of Ionic Compounds
