3: Atomic Number, Atomic Mas Number Of Neutrons And Electrons, Isotopes, Ions Flashcards
What is the atomic mass number of neutrons and electrons?
The number of electrons is the same as the atomic number or amount of protons.
The number of neutrons is the mass number (atomic weight rounded to nearest whole number) minus the amount of protons.
What is the atomic number?
The number of protons in an element, and therefore identical to the charge number.
What is an isotope?
The number of nucleons (both protons and neutrons) in the nucleus is the atoms mass number, and each isotope of a given element has a different mass number. For example, carbon- 12, carbon- 13, and carbon- 14 are three isotopes of the element carbon with mass numbers 12, 13, and 14 respectively.
What is an ion?
And atom or molecule in which the total number of electrons is not equal to the total number of protons, giving the atom or molecule a net positive or negative electrical charge. Can be created by both chemical or physical means.
