1: Metric Measurement, Atomic Theory, Rutherford's Experiment Flashcards
What is Dalton’s atomic theory?
1) All matter is made of atoms.
2) Atoms are indivisible and indestructible.
3) Compounds are formed by a combination of two or more different kinds of atoms.

What was Rutherford’s experiment and what did it prove?
Electrons were chunks of plum distributed through a positively charged sphere of pudding. In 1911, Ernest Rutherford performed an experiment to test the plum pudding model. He fired energetic a [He2+] particles at a foil, and measured the deflection of the particles as they came out the other side. Some of them were fired straight back though.
This showed that and atom was much more than just empty space and scattered electrons, and and atom must have a positively charged center that contains most of its mass (which Rutherford termed as the nucleus).
