(3) Arguments for the Existence of Allah Flashcards
1.1
Explain how Allah communicates with humans💬
- receiving a message from Allah through an angel could lead to belief in Allah
- an answer to prayer for a terminally ill friend could lead to belief in Allah
- a miracle which breaks the laws of science such as the Night Journey could lead to belief in Allah
1.2
Explain two examples of visions in the Qur’an
- Yusuf - ‘…indeed I have seen 11⭐ and ☀ and🌙prostrating to me’.
- Yusuf - ‘As for one of you, he will give drink to his master of 🍷; but as for the other, he will be crucified’.
- Ibrahim - ‘Indeed I have seen a dream that I sacrifice you’.🔪
1.3
“Miracles prove the existence of Allah” 💫
FOR
* extra-ordinary events, outside human knowledge that could only occur through an omnipotent being, proving the existence of Allah
* a terminally ill person recovering against everyone’s expectations after prayer, could not have been performed by a human so would prove the existence of Allah
AGAINST
* anybody could make up a story about a miracle as theres no proof, therefore
* scientific claims prove that some miracles cannot be real because there is no factual information or explanation, therefore
* the laws of nature cannot be broken so miracles do not happen, therefore cannot prove the existence of Allah.
1.3
Explain two reasons why Muslims regard the Quran as a miracle.
- revealed to humans by Allah, contains all the wisdom a Muslim requires to understand the will of Allah
- remained unaltered since it was first recorded, miraculous because Allah has protected it
1.4
Outline 3 ways religious experiences may increase a person’s belief in Allah.
- shows that Allah has power over all things
- prove that Allah supports the believer in times of trouble
- show that Allah hears a person’s prayers
- demonstrate that Allah cares for
his creation
1.5
Explain two ways the design argument shows the nature of Allah ✨
- Allah is the Creator, created everything with a purpose
- Allah wants to be known. His work is evident in nature
- Allah is sustaining the world and continuously involved in its existence
1.5
Explain why the design argument might prove the existence of Allah
- seasons arrive in order and nature is balanced to sustain life which could only work if overseen by a powerful being which must be Allah 🌦
- ‘Allah is in control of night and day and the season’
- The world is too complex to have just happened without a design and only Allah has enough knowledge to have designed the world
- ‘Allah is exalted in power and full of wisdom’
- Everything in the world works together for a purpose and would only be possible if designed by an all-loving Allah
- ‘the night is designed for resting and the day for giving sight’
1.6
The cosmological argument is the best way to show that Allah exists🚀
FOR
* uses the logic of unbiased science to demonstrate that a higher power must exist
* Allah is an all-powerful creator who creates what he wills from nothing
* ‘It is He who created night and day, the sun and moon, each floating in its orbit’
AGAINST
* only demonstrates the existence of a higher power
* found Allah through evidence of his work in the world today. The beauty of nature and the negative effects when humanity disobeys Allah’s plan provide stronger
* there is no ‘best’ way to prove Allah’s existence.
1.7
The existence of suffering leads to doubts about Allah’s existence
FOR
* if Allah was all-powerful, he should stop it
* if Allah is compassionate, he would not have created a world with faults in it
* Allah is all-knowing yet does nothing to stop suffering
AGAINST
* life is a test
* result of freewill
* ‘The fact is that man crosses the limits, because he deems himself to be free of need.’
1.7
Suffering shows the compassion of Allah
FOR
* Allah allows suffering to bring out the best in people and to show his power when he helps them
* Allah shows his compassion when he gives humans freewill
* Life is a test and a loving Allah allows people to suffer so that they can be rewarded on DoJ
AGAINST
* caused by humans’ misuse of freewill and unlinked to his compassion
* Allah is all powerful so he can stop it and help his people
* A compassionate God would not have created a world with some faults in it
