3 Flashcards
Why is fluoroscein drainage test unreliable in cats?
50% will fail it normally
What could be the potential causes of 3rd eyelid prominence in cats?
BILAT: common, assoc w/ systemic disease, self-limiting UNILAT: ocular pain, retrobulbar swelling, Horners’, symblepharon
What are the 2 most common causes of conjunctivitis in cats?
Chlamydiophila felis, Feline herpes
How do you treat chlamydiophila felis?
Doxycycline
Describe the clinical signs of feline herpes?
NEONATAL: ophthalmic neonatorum YOUNG CATS: flu, conjunctivitis, corneal ulceration, symblepharon OLDER CATS: latent infection-> underrun ulcers, stromal keratitis, chronic conjunctivitis
What are the causes of retinal atrophy in cats?
-Taurine deficiency (rare) -Generalised progressive retinal atrophy -Hypertensive (common in old cats, sudden onset vision loss -> retinal + virtual H+, retinal detachment, tortuosity of retinal vessels)
Define symblepharon
Destruction of cornea + conjunctiva ep leads to stroma->stroma contact causing corneal conjunctivalisation
Diagnosis of this cat? Which breed is predisposed?
Corneal sequestrum. Persians
What is corneal sequestrum and how is it treated?
Progressive black denatured corneal epithelial plaque extending through corneal ep w/ assoc loss of overlying ep + vascular response.
Refer for keratectomy.
Diagnosis of this cats’ condition?
Eosiniphilic keratitis: cottage cheese appearance of lesion
Define pthisis bulbli
Severe intraocular pathology leasing to small opaque end-stage eye (ciliary body production of aqueous has stopped). Usually painless- leave in situ
Define microphthalmos
Congenital small eye assoc w/ other congen abnormalities
How do you treat a prolapsed globe?
Apply butter to surface of eye and apply gentle pressure w/ wet cotton wool pad to hold globe in position. Replace under GA and suture lids together for 14d. Requires systemic a/bs + steroids.
Define buphthalmos
Globe enlargement due to chronic glaucoma -> enucleation
