#3 Flashcards
Advection Fog causes
Low layer of warm air moves over cooler surface, wind velocity is required for formation
Upslope Fog causes
Forms when moist, stable air is forced up a sloping land to where the air becomes saturated and condensation occurs, requires wind to form.
Ice fog causes
Occurs in cold weather when air is below freezing and water vapor sublimates directly into ice crystals
SIGMET Defined
Non Convective Weathers, to all aircrafts, reasons for SIGMET severe icing, servers or extreme turbulence, dust storms, sand storms, with less then 3 SM visibility or volcanic ash
Convective SIGMET Defined
Valid for 2 hours, reasons for convective SIGMETs, severe thunderstorms, surface winds more then 50kts, Hail at surface 3/4 inches in diameter, tornadoes, embedded thunderstorms, lines of thunderstorms 60 NM long and affecting 40% of covering area. (Convective SIGMET implies severe turbulence, severe icing, or low level wind shear)
Thunderstorms Defined
Most dangerous hazards to aircraft, three stages (towering, mature, dissipating), can have microbursts, stay 20 NM from thunderstorms
Wind Shear defined
Rapid change in direction and speed of winds, associated with frontal systems and microbursts, FAA recommends add 1/2 gust factor to approach speed for wind shear
Microbursts Defined
Rapidly descending column of air below a thunderstorm, can exceed 6000ft per minute, less then 2.5 NM in width with peak winds lasting less then 5 minutes
Approach Speed Formula
1.3 x Vso
AIRMET Defined
Issued for weather that can be hazardous to all aircraft but mainly applies to small aircraft, valid for 6 hours
