2nd Part (All Activities) Flashcards
Give a list of five commonly used metals in our daily life along with their uses.
1) Gold - Used in Ornaments
2) Aluminum - Used to prevent the spoilage of food
3) Iron - Used to make pipes, tanks and nails
4) Magnesium - Used in Fireworks
5) Copper - Used to make utensiles
Give a list of five commonly used metals in our daily life along with their uses.
1) Oxygen - Supports living organisms’ survival
2) Carbon - Used by plants to perform to process of photosynthesis.
3) Nitrogen - Makes up an essential food nutrient protein which is consumed by living organisms for beneficial reasons.
4) Iodine - Used in salts and also prevents Iodine deficiency such as goiter.
5) Sulphur - used to make insecticides and fungicides.
Give a list of three commonly used metalloids in our daily life along with their uses.
1) Silicon - Used in enamel and pottery.
2) Germanium - Used as a semiconductor
3) Antimony - Used in printing presses
Give a list of five commonly used noble gases in our daily life along with their uses.
1) Helium - Used for filling up weather observation balloons.
2) Argon - Used for filling electric bulbs to provide an inert atmosphere.
3) Neon - Used in making advertising signboards and tube lights since it emits a colored light when a high voltage current is passed through it.
4) Radon - Used in cancer treatment due to its radioactivity.
5) Xenon - Used in photography.
Prove that metals are lustrous
Take small pieces of copper and sulfur powder into separate watch glasses. Observe that copper shines but Sulphur doesn’t shine. This this is because copper is a metal and is lustrous but Sulphur is a non metal and is non lustrous.
Prove that metals are hard
Take small pieces of iron, copper, aluminum and magnesium. Try to cut these metals with a sharp knife. We will observe that these are hard and cannot be cut with a knife.
Compare the sonority of metals and non metals
Take a copper spoon and a cold piece. Drop them one by one on the floor. We’ll hear a specific sound when copper spoon is dropped but no sound will be heard on dropping a cold piece. Since, copper is a metal we can say that metals are sonorous and produce a specific sound when struck to a hard surface. Since, coal is a non metal we can say that non metals are non sonorous and doesn’t produce a sound when struck to a hard surface.
Prove that metals are malleable while non metals are brittle.
Take a small iron nail, an aluminum wire, a coal piece and a pencil lead. Now hammer each of them separately for some time. We notice that iron nail and aluminum wire have slightly become flat, their shape has changed, while coal piece and pencil lead are broken into pieces. Since, Iron nail and an aluminum wire are metals, they are malleable and can be broken down into sheets. Since, pencil it and coal piece are non metals, they are brittle and can be broken down into pieces.
Prove that metals are good conductors of electricity.
Take a battery, a bulb, a switch, and iron nail and a piece of coal. In the first case (a), an iron nail is connected to the wire and is in the circuit. When the switch is on the bulb closed indicating that iron being a metal is a good conductor of electricity.
In the last case (b), a cold piece is placed in the circuit connected to the wires. you will observe that the bulb does not blow when the switch is on indicating that no current is passing through the circuit This is because coal a form of non metal carbon is bad conductor of electricity.
Hence, it is proved that metals are good conductors while non metals are bad conductor of electricity.
Prove that metals are good conductors of heat.
on a cold day, touch a metal rod and a wooden rod. Metal rod appears to be much more colder than the wooden rod though both are at the same temperature. This is due to the fact that metals are good conductors of heat and conduct heat from a body quickly while would being a bad conductor of heat does not conduct heat so quickly.
