knee-jerk reflex
A reflexive action in which the leg jerks up when the flexed knee is tapped just below the kneecap. This reflex is commonly used as a quick test of the functioning of the nervous system.
koro
A mental disorder found only in some Southeast Asian and south Chinese cultures, which is characterized by sudden intense fear of the penis in men or belief that the nipples and vulva in women are shrinking and will disappear into the body, causing death.
kuru
A fatal prion disease of the central nervous system whose symptoms include ataxia, difficulty in balance and walking, squint, and tremors.
Korte’s laws
A description of the parameters affecting the illusion of apparent motion, including illumination level, separation of figures, exposure time, and interexposure interval.
kurtosis
A measure of the degree to which a probability distribution peaks around its mean.
A distribution that is more peaked than a normal curve is called leptokurtic, one that is equally peaked is called mesokurtic, and one that is less peaked than a normal curve is called platykurtic.
kymograph
An instrument for recording changes in psychological or physiological variables by means of a pen tracing a record on paper on a slowly revolving drum. These are seldom used in places where computers are now available for data recording.
kinship term
Any word which denotes relatedness in extended families. Languages and cultures vary considerably in such terminology. In the Japanese language, for example, there are different words for older and younger brothers and sisters.
kainic acid
A neurotoxic amino acid found in some species of red algae and the seaweed Digenea simplex, which potentiates the neurotransmitter glutamate and destroys postsynaptic
cells with glutamate receptors.

An occupational interest survey developed in 1939 which measured relative interest in 10 occupational areas: art, clerical, computational, literary, mechanical, music, outdoor, persuasive, science and social service.
Klinefelter’s syndrome
A genetic disorder of males characterized by the presence of an extra X, or female sex, chromosome in all the cells of the body.
