what is a psychosocial stress?
A
“Physiological and psychological changes that occur in the body when an external
demand or stressor taxes an individual’s adaptive capacity”
- Overarching socioeconomic and environmental factors
- Acute or chronic – based upon duration of exposure

A
- hard to do objectively
- Questionnaires/interviews – environmental and self-perceived stress
- Biomarkers or neuroendocrine measures – quantify physiological effects
- Increased cortisol, adrenaline, noradrenaline, dopamine levels

What do stress and depression increase the risk of?
A
- Chronic psychosocial stress closely linked with depressive disorders
- Stress and depression increase risk of chronic systemic conditions and worsen them
- CVD, diabetes - Depression associated with poorer periodontal treatment outcomes and tooth loss
