2Chapter 5 questions Flashcards
What measure of central tendency is most appropriate for ordinal data?
median
What measure of central tendency is most appropriate for interval data?
standard deviation
How would adding 5 to every observation affect the mean of a variable?
Increase mean by 5
How would adding 5 to every observation affect the variance of a variable
No effect
How would multiplying 5 to every observation affect the variance of a variable?
No effect
Which of the following symbols is used to represent the population variance?
o2
Which of the following graphs produced by SPSS is most useful in identifying extreme outliers?
Boxplot
Which of the following graphs produced by SPSS is most useful in examining the relationship between two variables?
Scatterplot
The median is the value that…
divided the ordered dataset into two equal halves
What is the interquartile range for a distribution with the following percentiles: P25=25, P50=50 P75=75
50
The interquartile range allows one to make a statement about…
The middle 50% of observations
what is the balancing point of the distribution
mean
the arithmetic average
mean
The mode is
the typical way of measuring central tendency for nominal data
What is correct regarding variance?
The average of the squared deviations from the mean
Which are measures of dispersion?
range, standard deviation, standard error of the mean
what is leptokurtic
A description of the kurtosis in a distribution in which the statistical value is positive. Leptokurtic distributions have higher peaks around the mean compared to normal distributions, which leads to thick tails on both sides. These peaks result from the data being highly concentrated around the mean, due to lower variations within observations.

What is platykurtic?
A description of the kurtosis in a distribution in which the statistical value is negative. When compared to a normal distribution, a platykurtic data set has a flatter peak around its mean, which causes thin tails within the distribution. The flatness results from the data being less concentrated around its mean, due to large variations within observations.

What is mesokurtic?
Definition of ‘Mesokurtic’
A term used in a statistical context where the kurtosis of a distribution is similar, or identical, to the kurtosis of a normally distributed data set. Kurtosis is a measure of a distribution’s peak, which means how much of the distribution is centered on the distributions mean.

What is correct about skewness
Skewness measures deviations from perfect symmetry
If a distribution were perfectly normal, the detrended Q-Q plot would show….
the popints would cluster in a horizontal band around y=0 with no pattern
What kind of data uses P-P plots
nominal and ordinal level data
