What was John’s right to b king based on?
He was supported by important people in the country/
He had proven himself to be a good warrior with Richard.
How did John secure his power?
He appointed a loyal baron to protect the north of the Kingdom from a treat from scotland.
He secured the continental lands of the empire.
He made a peace treaty with king Philip of France.
How did John govern/ run the country?
He chose “new men” instead of barons to advise him. New men would tell John what he wanted to hear as he promised them riches in return.
John suspected justice. He shut down the court of the Kings Bench and started using arbitrary power.
He used cruel punishment for anyone who double crossed him. For example he starved to death the wife and child of William De Braose who owed him a lot of money.
