2B.12a Integrated coastal zone management Flashcards
what is ICZM
a key characteristic is that the entire coast in managed, not just the narrow zone where breaking waves cause erosion or flooding
ICZM emphasises cooperation between all stakeholders
works with the concept of littoral cells –> the coastline can be divided up into littoral cells and each cell is managed as an integrated unit
e.g. in England and Wales there are 11 sediment cells
the EU adopted the Recommendation on Integrated Coastal Zone Management in 2002
the Marine Strategy Framework Directive of 2008 also emphasised a comprehensive and integrated approach to protect all European coasts and seas
part of Philippines have ICZMs such as Lingayen Gulf and Batangas Bay
ICZM Project Odisha
an ICZM project has been implemented in Odisha’s coastal zone, on India’s north-east coast, which is under stress from coastal erosion, tourism, rising sea levels etc.
