2A) Group 1 Metals Flashcards
What are the Alkali metals
Group 1 elements
Lithium
Sodium
Potassium
….
Properties
- silvery coloured metals
- highly reactive
- low melting and boiling points
- soft, easily cut with a knife to expose a shiny surface that dulls on oxidation
How is the reactivity of Group 1
increases down the group
lithium is least reactive
caesium most reactive
How is density of Group 1
low densities (float on water). density increases down the group
Observations of metals with air
Lithium: dulls with oxidation
Sodium: dulls with oxidation faster than lithium
Potassium: dulls with oxidation very quickly
Observations of metals with water
Lithium: floats, fizzes, moves around
Sodium: more fizzing, might light up with yellow flame, floats, moves around faster, forms a ball
Potassium: sets fire with lilac flame, floats, moves quickly, lots of fizzing, dissolves quickly
Equation for metal and water
Metal + water —> metal hydroxide + hydrogen
