What are some important things regarding using the kardex on the ward?
Don’t put the kardex down until someone has signed it.
Front-allergies
Middle- what they take and what you’re prescribing
Codes and info, as required drugs
What do you need to know about doltaparin?
Low molecular weight heparin, always prescribed on surgical wards unless contraindicated.
Given to anyone who’s at risk of a clot, subcut injection. Standard dose 2500 units BMI<30
5000 units or BMI over 30
What are the common prescribing errors with amoxicillin and co-tramoxazole
Allergies, quite common
Amoxicillin- penicillin allergies
Co-tramoxazole- if allergic to trimethiprim
What is the standard paracetamol dose?
1g, 4 times per day unless LFT’s or weight under 50kg
What is a good anti-sickness drug
Cyclizine, 50mg, same dose given IV
What is a good painkiller drug?
10mg every four hours, typically no upper dose
What do you always prescribe with a painkiller
an anti sickness drug
What is metoclopermide?
drug for nausea and vomiting, 10mg every 6-8 hours
What is domperidone?
Anti nausea and vomiting drug, 10 mg three times per day. Max 30mg
