[28] Radial and Ulna Shaft Fractures Flashcards
What is a Monteggia fracture?
A fracture of the proximal 3rd of the ulna shaft with anterior dislocation of the radial head at the capitellum
What nerve involvement might there be in a Monteggia fracture?
Palsy of the deep branch of the radial nerve
What might a palsy of the deep branch of the radial nerve lead to?
Weak finger extension
No sensory loss
What is a galleazzi fracture?
A fracture of the radial shaft between the mid and distal 3rd, with dislocation of the distal radio-ulnar joint
How should unstable radial and ulna shaft fractures be managed in adults?
Oral reduction and internal fixation
How should unstable radial and ulna shaft fractures be managed in children?
Manipulation under anaesthesia and above elbow plaster
How should fractures of the forearm be plastered?
In the most stable position
What is the most stable position for the plastering of a proximal forearm fracture?
Supation
What is the most stable position for the plastering of a distal forearm fracture?
Pronation
What is the most stable position for the plastering of a mid-shaft forearm fracture?
Neutral
