What is the meaning of ‘Id’?

What is Id-ul-Adha?
Id-ul-Adha is the Festival of Sacrifice and it remembers when the Prophet Ibrahim was tested by Allah & commanded to sacrifice his son. It is important because reminds Muslims of the importance of developing faith and trust in Allah.
What is Id-ul-Fitr?
Id-ul-Fitr is the Festival of breaking the fast that takes place at the end of Ramadan. It is important to thank Allah for the strength he gave them to fast.
What is Id-ul-Ghadeer?
Only Shi’a Muslims recognize this festival. It remembers the appointment of Ali as Muhammad’s successor. Shi’as believe that immediately after the announcement, Islam was declared perfect by Allah - confirming that Ali is Muhammad’s rightful successor. This event shows Shi’as the line of leadership within their religion.
What is Ashura?
Ashura is a celebration recognized by both Sunni and Shi’a Muslims that takes place on the tenth day of Muharram. It commemorates Islamic history, although Shi’as consider it more important than Sunnis do.
Why are religious celebrations important to Muslims?
- To remember significant events in the history of Islam
- For Muslims to connect to the past and ensure their history is not forgotten
- Helps Muslims to understand their religion and live life as Allah wishes
- Brings them closer to Allah
- Helps to reinforce the ummah
