1st Admendment
Freedom of expression, religion, speech, press. assembly, and petition.
2nd Admendment
Protects the rights of individual citizens to keep and bear arms. Establishes a militia that is neccesary for a free state.
3rd Admendment
Prohibits soilders from temporarily residing (quartering) in private homes during peacetime without getting the permission and consent of the owner.
4th Admendment
Protects people’s right to privacy. prohibits unreaseonable searches and seizures by the government.
5th Amendment
No person tried without the grand jury indictment or punished twice for the same offense. Prohibits being a witness against yourself and guarantees “due process of law.”
6th Admendment
Rights of accused in criminal cases, including legal representation and a fair and speedy trial.
7th Admendment
Guarantees a trial by jury. (trial by = seven letters)
8th Admendment
Insures that punishments for crimes are not exsessive, cruel, or unsual.
9th Admendment
People retain rights not listed in the United States Constitution .
10 Admendment
Power not given to the federal Government is given to the people or states (very important for state government).
11 Admendment
Individual cannot sue state in federal courts.
12 Admendment
Repeals part of Article 2, Section 1, of the Constitution. Electoral College must case seprate ballots for president and vice president.
13 Admendment
Abolished slavery and involuntary servitude.
14 Admendment
All persons born or naturlized in the United States enjoy full rights. This was done to protect the rights of freed slaves and minorites after the Civil War, but it applies equally to all Americans. This Admendment also made specific rules concerning the southern states after the Civil war.
15 Admendment
Protects the rights of Americans to vote in elections. States cannot prevent a person from voting becuase of race, creed, or color. The right to vote is known as suffrage.
16 Admendment
Establishes Congress’s right to impose a federal income tax.
17 Admendment
Provided for popilar election of United States senators. Repeals part of Article 1, Section 3. In the past, senators were elected by state legislatures.
18 Admendment
Prohibition. No alcoholic beverages to be bought or sold in the United States ( to be later repealed).
19 Admendment
Woman suffage. Some states had already given women the right to vote in some elections. This Admendment provides all women, who are U.S. citizens, the right to vote in all elections.
20 Admendment
Changed the date the president takes office from March 4th to January 20th ( 4 year term). It also changed the start of Congress to January 3rd and ended the old second session (end of Lame Duck Congress).
21 Admendment
Repealed prohibiton and voided the 18th Admendment (the only amendment to repeal another admendment).
22 Admendment
No person shall be elected to the office more than twice.
23 Admendment
Gave president of Whashington, D.C., the right to vote in presidential elections.
24 Admendment
Anti-Poll tax admendment. Forbids taxing voters before they vote in national elections.
25 Admendment
Established the process by which an ailing presidnet may pass the duties of the office to the vice president and fill the Vice presidnets office, when vacant. Any vacancy in the vice presidency is filled by appointment made by the president, with approval by a majority of both houses of Congress.
26 Admendment
18 year olds are allowed to vote in federal adn state elections.
27 Admendment
Prohibits Congress from voting itself mid-term pay raises.
