1st Amendment
Freedom of expression, religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition (FREEDOM COMES FIRST)
2nd Amendment
Protects rights of individual citizens to keep and bear arms (2 BEAR ARMS)
3rd Amendment
Prohibits soldiers from quartering in private homes without getting permission and consent of the owner (HOLD UP A 3, QUARTER SIZE)
4th Amendment
Protect peoples rights to privacy, prohibits unreasonable searches by gov. (4 P’s, protect, peoples, privacy, prohibits)
5th Amendment
No person tried without the grand jury or punished twice for the same offense (TWICE = FIVE LETTERS)
6th Amendment
Rights of accused in criminal cases, including legal representation and a fair and speedy trial (RIGHTS = SIX LETTERS)
7th Amendment
Guarantees a trial by jury (TRIAL BY = 7 LETTERS)
8th Amendment
Insures that punishments for crimes are not excessive, cruel, or unusual (NO HELP :l)
9th Amendment
People retain rights not listed in the US Constitution (PEOPLES RIGHTS FIRST)
10th Amendment
Power not given to the federal government is given to the people or states (FEDERAL RIGHTS SECOND)
11th Amendment
Individual cannot sue a state in federal court (looks like 11 at beginning & end of “Individual”
12th Amendment
Article 2, Section 1 (backwards = 12)
13th Amendment
abolished slavery and involuntary servitude (lucky 13)
14th Amendment
All persons born or naturalized in the US enjoy full rights (ENJOY FULL RIGHT = 14 letters)
15th Amendment
States can’t prevent color from voting (no help)
