what are the most classic features of OSA?
loud snoring, apneas, excessive daytime sleepiness
how do morning headaches factor in to all this?
C02 is a cerebral vasodilator - may reflect nocturnal hypercapnia
can you have OSA with a mild restrictive pattern?
apparently so. restrictive pattern can be secondary to obesity.
how can reflux be explained by OSA?
occurs more with obese, also develop negative intrathroacic pressure while attempting to breathe, pulls up stomach acid
how can you ahve obstructive sleep apnea, wihtout spirometry pattern of obstruction?
obstruction occurs at night, measures are taken during day
how can alcohol worsen OSA?
alcohol affects motor output to muscles of upper airway.
how can obesity worsen OSA
anatomic narrowing of the airway.
what are treatment options for OSA?
wt loss, avoiding EtOH, dental appliances, CPAP, tracheostomy!
what is the most effective treatment for OSA
CPAP. mechanical stenting of the upper airway.
